According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for laboratory workers has grown 13 percent in the last year, nearly double the average for all other occupations

in the United States (Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/clinical-laboratory-technologists-and-technicians.
htm). The BLS reports that this trend is expected to continue with demand far outpacing the average for all occupations. Overall employment of clinical laboratory
technologists and technicians is projected to grow 11 percent from 2018 to 2028. They attribute this to legislative and regulatory reforms, major advances in medical
diagnostics and treatment, and a profound shift in population demographics (those over age 65 will more than double between now and 2050), which is expected to
cause a greater need for laboratory diagnostics.

a comprehensive overview of the critical workforce shortage of medical laboratory professionals (medical laboratory technicians, medical laboratory scientists,
histotechnicians, and histotechnologists), the reason for the shortage, the impact the shortage will have in the clinical laboratory setting, its impact on patient care and
access, and its impact on educational facilities.
