What is HIPAA?

HIPAA is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, which amends the Internal Revenue Service Code of 1986. It is the Administrative Simplification section of this legislation that has a more pervasive effect on health plans, billing agencies, information systems vendors, and other providers. Within the provisions in this section, HIPAA requires improved efficiency in healthcare delivery by standardizing electronic data interchange (EDI) and protection of confidentiality and security of health data through the setting and enforcement of standards. In anticipation of the final ruling, the Proposed Rules for Security and Privacy standards are now being analyzed and a comprehensive assessment of all our products, as well as our organization's own security measures, policies, and procedures, is being performed to ensure compliance with the law.

Furthermore, a company–wide Awareness Program is to be implemented to make everyone at SCC aware of the importance of this legislation and its specific implementations within the company.
