Don Keller
Vice President, Global
Education
Marketing Manager
SNUG Conference Director
Ohio native, Don Keller, SCC Soft
Computer’s Vice President of Global Education, is SCC’s Chief Learning
Officer and Marketing Manager. He holds a Masters in Education Leadership
and additional training certificates from DePaul University, SCC, IBM, AIG,
Microsoft, and more. An award-winning motivational and focused leader, Don
excels at leading high-performance teams to continually meet and exceed
organizational learning objectives in demanding environments. He earned his
AA from Kent State University, his BS in Geography from the University of the
State of New York, and his MS in Education Leadership from Hamilton University.
Don
started SCC’s Educational Services department when he joined the company in
February 1998. At that time, the company offered 17 instructor-led courses
to its clients and 240 employees. Within just three years, Don created a
department that currently serves nearly 1,600 internal clients and over 6,000
external clients with a training staff of 40+ worldwide. Today, SCC offers
14,000+ courses offered to its clients and staff, including instructor-led
classes, CBT, locally created HTML courses, Webinars, and training courses on
CD.
The
growth of SCC’s Educational Services department has been fueled by several
factors, including a need for better client training and an increase in the
number of employees. The success of the department can be attributed to Don
and the team he has assembled. His vision has established SCC as an
organization that recognizes the importance of training and continuing
education, and values the contributions made by well-trained employees.
The
improvements at SCC have not gone unnoticed. In 2011, the EDS team proudly
accepted its ninth Training Top 125 award in ten years, placing 4th
and earning its second Training Top 5 and fourth consecutive Training Top
10 — making SCC the first healthcare IT firm to achieve this feat. In 2010,
SCC won the ASTD/ISPI OPAL Awards for Excellence in Team Success and Excellence
in Customer Satisfaction. In 2009, SCC won the ASTD/ISPI OPAL Award for
Excellence in Leadership Development. In 2009, SCC placed 3rd in
the ASTD BEST Awards. Under Don’s direction, the team continues to look for
ways to improve and add value to SCC.
Don and his education and marketing teams are currently planning HITS - Healthcare
Information Technology Summit, SNUG's Annual Conference at the Sheraton Sand Key
Resort on Clearwater Beach. For details and registration, please visit the SNUG

with SCC personnel and clients as she assists with coordination of the annual
Soft Network Users’ Group conference (SNUG). She looks forward to helping
continuously improve the SNUG experience for all attendees with her
innovative ideas.

Myra Pettis
Manager, Educational
Services
A native Floridian, Myra Pettis, SCC’s Educational Service Manager, earned her BS in
Medical Technology from the University of South Florida (USF), Tampa. She completed her internship at Bayfront Medical Center (BMC) — a trauma center and
teaching hospital located in St. Petersburg, Florida. She worked for BMC for
nine years in all areas of the lab, but spent the majority of her tenure in
Microbiology as a special instructor for the Medical Technology interns from
USF. After leaving BMC, Myra was employed for four years at Quest Laboratory
in the field of Microbiology. She joined SCC in 1998 and was Client
Education Team Lead and an LIS Trainer. In addition to teaching SoftMic
System Design I and II, SoftMicQC, and SoftTotalQC, Myra was a regular SNUG
presenter for several years. She still presents internal classes on
instructional design.
As
SCC’s Educational Services Manager, Myra supervises a team of laboratory
professionals, multi-media specialists, and course developers responsible for
developing and delivering the quality product training SCC offers to its
clients and staff. In 2008, she initiated a requirement that all SCC product
trainers sit for the Certified Technical Trainer examination. She also
implemented quality and standardization for training manuals, and the “Training
Metaframe,” which allows SCC personnel to teach a class at a client site
without having to install a training site on the client's server. In
addition, Myra implemented a ‘cloud training’ environment that enables
clients to perform training exercises through the Internet without having to
be at SCC or having a special training environment installed on their
servers.
Myra works closely with Don Keller, Vice President of Global Education & Development, to bring SCC's valued clients
the Soft Network Users Group (SNUG) conference each year, and to secure
P.AC.E.® credits for clients who attend
SNUG sessions. Myra's "best practice" initiatives in management — including
the addition of Educational Services Training week where trainers have the
opportunity to fine-tune skills, the EDS “Bright Ideas” program, and “Tuesday
Training Tips” — have contributed to SCC's continued ranking in Training magazine’s
Training Top 125. The goal of the “Tuesdays with Myra” training tips is to
provide small nuggets of information specific to some function of the
trainer’s or developer’s job. Myra explains where she got her inspiration,
“there is a wealth of information available online in articles, blogs, and
whitepapers. By utilizing these readily available resources, we can maintain
a constant environment of learning.”
In her
free time, Myra loves watching movies — especially action and comedy, and reading
murder mysteries.

Nicholas Felts
LIS Trainer, SoftLab
System Design II, LIS Administration
A multi-generational Florida native, Nicholas can trace his Florida heritage back to the early 1700s when his privateer, wrecker, fisherman, and lighthouse-keeping ancestors inhabited the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, and Florida Keys. With salt water coursing through his veins, Nick is an avid fisherman who pursues inshore and offshore species of fish — mostly from his kayak.
To support this fishing obsession, Nick obtained his BS in Medical Technology from University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando, which is the farthest away from the saltwater he has ever lived, or will ever live again. During this time, Nick worked for the American Red Cross of Central Florida as a CPR/First Aid Instructor, and as a Shelter Manager for the Disaster Action Team during the 2004 hurricane season when three major hurricanes ripped through Orlando (Charlie, Frances, and Jeanne). After graduation he promptly moved back to the Tampa Bay area.
Nick worked as a Medical Technologist at Cryo-Cell International for a couple years before coming to SCC in 2009 as a SoftLab Implementation/Upgrades Specialist. For over two years, SCC sent Nick and his travel rod and reel, all across North America — from the frozen tundra of Northwest Territories in Canada, to the sweltering deserts of El Paso, Texas. While relatively new to the company, Nick learned quickly and has enjoyed teaching at the 2010 and 2011 SNUG conferences. His skills as an instructor were quickly noticed by the Educational Services department, and in July 2011, Don Keller came to Nick begging him to join his division and teach the SoftLab System Design II and the LIS Administrator courses. After careful consideration of how much more fishing he could do without a hectic travel schedule, Nick accepted the position and is now an esteemed member of the EDS team.
Nick is an SCP Certified Support Professional, and winner of many local and statewide saltwater fishing tournaments, the most notable of which was the 2011 Salty Fly, where he took first place against the top Fly anglers in the state while fishing from a canoe.

Jack
Fiery
LMS Administrator
Jack Fiery, SCC’s LMS Administrator, spent 30 years in United States Navy, specializing
in Naval Aviation. Jack earned the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, and during
his naval career, he went to sea on 19 different ships — 17 of which were
aircraft carriers, starting with the USS Leyte and ending with the USS
Enterprise. Among the aircraft he has worked on are CH-19E, HSS-1N, SH-3A,
EP-3E, A-3, and CH-46.
Jack
served during the Vietnam War and witnessed many of the historic events that
occurred during the last half of the 20th century — including the
birth of Surtsey1. He was originally stationed at the
Seaplane Base in Key West in 1957. At that time, he could take an overnight
ferry to Havana, Cuba, for a weekend stay. During that time, Fidel Castro
came to Key West as a hero after the revolution. Jack witnessed Castro
walking down the streets of Key West to the roar of the crowds. Stationed at
Naval Air Station (NAS) Key West during the Cuban Missile Crisis2, Jack participated in the Cuban
Blockade. In
1970, Jack was a
member of the Apollo 13 recovery team3 aboard the USS Iwo Jima4. He was stationed on the island of Guam5 in the South
Pacific for three years and rode out Super Typhoon Pamela6 with his wife, Gretchen. The
year before that, Jack participated in Operation Frequent Wind7 during which the population of
Guam temporarily increased by 118,000 when refugees were transported from Vietnam before the fall of Saigon.
An
interesting note about Jack: he grew up in Miami and during one period was
Al Capone’s paper boy when the former mobster resided in an estate on Miami Beach’s Palm Island.8
Jack
earned his BS in Adult Education from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Before joining SCC’s Educational Services team in 1998, he taught Basic
Electronics at Tampa Technical Institute (TTI) and became Chairman of the
Electronics Department. A Certified Level Two Fire Alarm Technician, Jack
developed and taught the Industrial Fire Alarm Systems course at Edward
Systems Technology, and he developed and taught the FAA Ground Electronics
Technician course as well.
During his tenure with SCC, Jack has worked as an
Instructor and Course Developer for SCC’s EDS department. He is currently SCC’s
LMS Administrator. In his spare time, Jack enjoying biking on the trails
near his home and flying small aircraft from Peter O. Knight Airport on Davis Islands, near downtown Tampa.
________________________
1Formed in a volcanic
eruption that lasted from 1963 until 1967, Surtsey is a volcanic island off
the southern coast of Iceland. Surtsey is now the southernmost point of
Iceland. Jack flew a National Geographic film crew over the volcano
when they were covering the historical eruption for the cover story Surtsey:
island born of fire, May 1965.
2The Cuban Missile
Crisis was a confrontation between the Soviet Union and Cuba and the United States in October 1962, during the Cold War. Reconnaissance and operational
flights were begun October 22, 1962, in support of the blockade around Cuba. During the crisis, Key West earned its title of “Gibraltar of the Gulf”
coined a hundred years earlier by Commodore David Porter.
3The Apollo 13
spacecraft splashed down at 12:07:44 p.m., April 17, 1970. The Apollo 13
crew (James A. Lovell Jr., commander; Fred W. Haise Jr., lunar module
pilot; and John L. Swigert Jr., command module pilot) was recovered by a
helicopter from the prime recovery ship, USS Iwo Jima, following splashdown
and recovery operations in the South Pacific. The story of Apollo 13 was
immortalized in the 1995 film based on Jim Lovell’s book, Lost Moon.
4Launched 17 September
1960, the USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2) was the lead ship of her class — the first ship
to be designed and built from the keel up as an amphibious assault ship. She
carried helicopters and a detachment of embarked Marines for use in the
Navy's “vertical envelopment” concept of amphibious operations. On 17 April
1970, Iwo Jima was the flagship of TaskForce 130 that waited for the Apollo
13 spaceship's astronauts after their memorable “successful failure” mission
and splashdown near American Samoa.
5The largest and
southernmost of the Mariana Islands, Guam – “Where America’s Day Begins” – is one of five U.S. territories with an established civilian
government.
6On May 21, 1976, Super
Typhoon Pamela crossed Guam with sustained winds of 190 mph. Pamela was the
strongest typhoon to hit Guam since Super Typhoon Karen in 1962. Though
Karen was much stronger, Pamela's slow crossing caused much more damage,
amounting to $500 million (1976 USD, $1.7 billion 2005 USD). Although well-executed
warnings allowed for only one death in Guam, before Pamela hit Guam, ten people died in a landslide in Truk from its heavy rains.
7Operation Frequent
Wind was the evacuation by helicopter of American civilians and at-risk
Vietnamese from Saigon, South Vietnam, on 29–30 April 1975 during the last
days of the Vietnam War. More than 13,000 refugees were delivered by the USS
Midway; many more were flown in using C-5s and 747s.
8 In 1939, Al Capone
was released from the infamous US Penitentiary on Alcatraz where he had been
serving time for tax evasion (his sentenced was shortened for good behavior).
Upon his release, Capone returned to his mansion near Miami Beach, where he
lived until his death in 1947.
